Friday Find: Baby Stuff the Second Time Around– Get This Instead of This

Got a baby registry? Check out my recommendations.

*I usually share outfits that emphasize flattering an apple shape, but while I’m settling into life with a newborn, I’ll only be doing Friday Find posts. Style posts will return when things have settled down.

Something I’ll never understand about babies and kids- why do these tiny little humans need so many things?! I remember before I had my first child, I asked around at what items I needed to buy. Oh the overwhelm! So many options for so much crap! Having tried so many products, I hope you don’t have to go through the same overwhelm. This is a short list of items you are suggested to purchase, and I’ll tell you what you really want to purchase instead and the reason these items are much, much better. Ok, so here goes.

Instead of this….

The boppy is amazing, IF you want to sit the entire time you’re nursing. If you ever want to stand up, it’s basically useless. Considering you will be nursing 24/7, it’s very impractical.  You’ll be attached to your rocking chair all day. Also considering at one point or another you’ll probably fall asleep nursing (like 2am feedings), it’s also not the safest nursing pillow.

Unlike the sloppy bobby, the my brest friend is the sturdier, more reliable cousin. It snaps on tight to your waist, so you can actually stand up and answer the door in the middle of your nursing session! It has a pocket you can put your water bottle in, or your phone, or the book you’re diving into while you’re nursing, or if you’re like me, the remote control so you can finally get up to speed with Game of Thrones before the next season arrives. I feel like my baby is safer on it too if I accidentally fall asleep nursing because the baby is laying on a firm shelf instead of an unsecured pillow (the boppy). The my brest friend also allows you to do less slouching over than the boppy (save your back!) because it isn’t laying on your lap, it’s around your waist. You can also push it up higher if you want so your baby has the easiest access to your nipples. It even has two elevated areas on it to place the baby’s head for even more elevation. I don’t know of any mom who would prefer the boppy over the my brest friend if they have tried both.

swaddle blankets

With my first child, I almost convinced myself I’d fail as a mother if I didn’t figure out that darn swaddle technique. But both of my boys had the arm strength of Samson and always found a way to get out of the swaddles- even those swaddles done by the professional nurses who swaddle 24/7 in the hospital.  And in the middle of the night, let me tell you, the LAST thing you want to do is take longer than 2 seconds to put on a swaddle blanket. So…..

I am not exaggerating when I tell you that I cannot live without these blankets. If they were in the wash and I had none available, it was time to do a load of laundry. I recommend getting at LEAST 6. They come in a set of three. You always want one available. My babies would not sleep without being wrapped in these. With these velcro swaddle blankets, it takes me literally 2 seconds to swaddle, and my babies can’t fight their way out of these things. These magic velcro blankets will make you say no to traditional swaddling forever.

button down anything

I don’t know about you, but the faster it takes to dress my baby, the easier it is on me. Saving time, when you have so very little time for yourself when you have a newborn, is everything. So it’s all about the details. If I’m going to be changing diapers a gazillion times a day, I don’t want to button up a onesie a gazillion times a day too, and don’t get me started on the frustration of buttoning the wrong buttons and having to redo it again in the middle of the night, so….

Zip and get to the diaper, zip and get back to sleep. amen.

And most importantly, instead of this…

Reading all those parenting books you’re not going to need in forever…

Go watch the short video, “Happiest Baby on the Block.” A friend of mine recommended this to me before I became a mom, and now I’m sharing it with you. I would shout this from the rooftops if I knew all the soon-to-be moms were listening. It has made all the difference between losing my marbles and my sleep during the newborn/infant stage, and keeping it together. It will save your sanity. Trust me.

Also, my most prized possession for getting enough sleep during the newborn phase– my Fitbit. Here’s why.
