Today’s body positive beauty is Monica, a feisty Latina with gorgeous eyes and a penchant for wearing (and making) decorative hair toppers. Welcome Monica!
I love your style! How would you describe your style or who or what inspires you?
I would say my style is classic chic. I really love pairing thrifted finds with high end pieces. I feel like it always gives me that extra confidence.
Is there a pivotal experience in your life that helped you learn to accept and love your body just the way it is?
As a young woman I grew up in a vary toxic environment. My mother was a typical Latina woman who expected me to be thin and beautiful. Unfortunately, I am not a cookie cutter version of my mother, and she never let me forget it. It took me many many years to figure out who I was. I don’t believe there was a specific moment that changed me, but I do owe my confidence to clothes. Clothes can change you, they can transport you back to a specific moment in time. I truly believe that my love for fashion is what really allowed me to accept who I am and who I’m evolving into.
I love that fashion empowered you in that way! Do you have a favorite shop?
Not really. I try not to be “brand loyal.” I look for items that I love and that I know I will wear multiple times in multiple ways.
I’m the same way about brands and choosing clothes. I noticed your Instagram profile mentioning the negative effects of fast fashion. What do you think is the solution to this dilemma?
Unfortunately with today’s climate there isn’t a quick, one stop solution. With that being said, I really believe that purchasing items that are of better quality and possibly more expensive will guarantee that those items are not only used more but can become treasured pieces in your closet. Basically buy things that you love and that will last and never be afraid to purchase things second hand because I have found some beautiful gems in my local thrift stores.
My husband taught me that principle too– to always choose quality over quantity, and that often means spending a little more to get something that will last longer. So, actually in the long run, you can save money by spending a little up front. Let’s change gears a little bit and talk about rituals! Is there any habit or ritual that has significant impacted your life positively that you’d care to share with our readers?
As a woman with PCOS who was been ignored by most doctors I really believe that taking your health into your own hands should be your top priority. Waiting around for a doctor to tell you, “You’re just fat, eat under 1000 calories a day and everything will get better.” can no longer be our solution. I have personally lost 50lbs by eating high quality protein, low carbs and including some type of low impact exercise like yoga into my daily routine. Changing this part of my life has helped me feel happy and healthy.
That’s no easy feat! You look beautiful! What makes someone beautiful in your eyes?
Confidence. Honestly there is nothing better than a confident woman or man. It always seems like they have everything under control lol. Which is probably not true, but hey the confidence helps!
So true, so true! When do you feel the most beautiful?
Right now, in this moment is probably the most beautiful I have ever felt in my life. As I’ve gotten older I have made the things that are important to me a priority and no longer compare myself to who others think I should be. I am ME and nothing can be more beautiful than that.
Amen!! Who or what in your life has positively influenced your idea of beauty?
My husband. He has shown me that my beauty is enough, and that it’s perfect just the way it is. He’s shown me that I don’t have to change the person I am on the outside to reflect the person on the inside. He’s shown me that if I trust and love myself enough eventually both the inside and outside will match, and I think that’s awesome advice.
I’m so glad you have found that kind of love and support from a spouse! My husband has been that way for me as well. I wish this wasn’t the truth but I don’t think I’d feel as good in my body or as confident as I do about my appearance if it wasn’t for his influence in my life. Ok, now we have to talk about the hair toppers you create. Tell us more!
About 10 years ago I started losing my hair, and at this point my hair was practically non existent. PCOS sucks. So my favorite accessory, if it can be called that, is my hair topper. It gives me confidence, and makes me feel like a real woman. Not that you have to have hair to be a woman BUT for ME it helps. I strongly believe that every person should do or wear what ever makes them happy even if it doesn’t align with society’s ideals. Be true to yourself!
I agree wholeheartedly! What’s a go to outfit that makes you feel really confident?
Any cute A-line dress. They’re easy to throw on and I can basically guarantee that I can balance my body by adding a cute belt and I’m out the door. I am constantly on the search for an A-line dress.
You look amazing in them! We all have bad days when we don’t feel or look our best. Is there anything that helps you turn a bad day around?
I try to realize that I’m not in this alone. That it’s okay to sit on the couch and watch Netflix, that it’s okay that the house is a little messy, and it’s okay that not everything is OK.
Thank you so much Monica! You are beautiful inside and out. Where can our readers find you?
