Family Photo Ideas for the whole family

Just wanted to share our family pictures for 2017 and some family photo ideas and tips. That’s my hubby Nate and my son Noah.
Tip 1.
When shooting full body pictures like the one above, shoot from below. Everyone’s legs look so long. Also shoot from farther away. The closer the camera is, the bigger everyone looks.
Tip 2.
Pay attention to how your face is angled toward the camera.
I hate getting my pictures taken and so does Nate. Kinda surprising since I’m a fashion and beauty blogger, huh? Well I’m really self conscious about my wide face. I always feel like it looks puffy. Anyways, one trick I’ve found is to never take pictures with my face pointing straight at the camera. I always move my head slightly to the left or right at an angle the way I did in the above two pictures. If you have a long face, the opposite would be true. You would want to make sure you are facing the camera straight on.
Tip 3
It’s not the photographer’s job to think of all the poses. Have some up your sleeve. I actually wrote ideas down on my Iphone and saved some photos I found on Pinterest in my camera’s photo folder for easy access the day of the shoot.
Tip 4
Don’t take pictures midday if the sun is out. You’ll get unsightly shadows. We actually took these photos at 8 am.
Above is a fun way to introduce the set of family photos (great for Facebook) and have the date somewhere mixed in. Notice how I kept my nail color and heart color red like my red balloon so the theme is cohesive.
Tip 5
When in doubt, give cheek kisses! I haven’t seen a single photo that doesn’t look good with someone giving a cheek kiss. That profile looks good on everyone.

Tip 6
Just because it’s a family shoot doesn’t mean every picture has to have the whole family.
Even though these are family photos, I also like to make sure I have some pictures of just daddy and son…
and some pictures of just mommy and son.

Again, even though it’s a family photo shoot, I also like to have some pictures of just me and hubby.
Of course Noah needed pictures all by himself too.
Tip 7
Not every part of the body has to show.
I love me some leg and footwear only pics.

Tip 8
Think about the color scheme. I chose a city background of mostly grays with the staircases at the Civic Center and dressed us all for the part. I wanted all the red elements to pop (balloon, my nails, the paper heart, and the heart on the bottom of the balloon string).
Tip 9
Have fun! Sometimes the best pictures are the ones that look silly and candid, like the one below:) Choose a photographer who takes ALOT of pictures. Mine took over 600 shots in 40 minutes!! This guarantees you don’t miss a good shot.

Looks like Noah is trying to make a point! My mouth is gaping wide open but it works with this silly picture.
Tip 10
The biggest tip if you hate taking pictures like my husband and I is to just accept the fact that you won’t like the majority of the pictures.
It has nothing to do with the photographer. DSLR cameras tend to add pounds. So typically the nicer quality the photos are, the more you will hate how you look in them. That’s if you’re like me and you’re your worst critic. My photographer took over 600 photos! I probably love only a couple dozen just because of how I look. So, with this being said, choose a photographer who will give you all the pictures! Sometimes the ones the photographer edits aren’t going to be your favorites. Also if you’re feeling self conscious about the photos, ask your photographer not to make any of them public. You can choose which ones to make public when you get them.
Hope these tips helped!
