Growing Your Own Decorative Arrangements

Whether you’re decorating a classroom, a wedding ceremony, or your own living quarters, floral arrangements have more versatility than many realize. Certainly flowers are beautiful to look on, they smell excellent, and some are even edible. Many have interesting tactile qualities as well. About the only sense people have which can’t be stimulated by flowers is that of sound—and that’s what birds and bees bring to a garden!

If you’ve got a flair for the dramatic, the innovative, or the unique, you might consider designing interior arrangements which make use of living flowers. Depending on your climate, you can acquire flowers for all seasons. If you don’t have the climate to do this outdoors, you can likely facilitate such a climate with a greenhouse, or grow some plants indoors. If you do have outdoor solutions, you may need to consult pest professionals to help avoid unwanted guests among your plants.

Whatever you decide to do, there are enough hues, shapes, shades, and smells in the floral kingdom to fit the needs of any decorator. You could make a multi-colored mosaic on a wall that conforms to a digital picture and from a distance combines individual flowers to make a larger image.

You could additionally use such design techniques to match seasonal holidays like Christmas, Easter, or the fourth of July. Flag day is coming up, and what better way to show your support than with a red, white, and blue floral arrangement in your room? Of course, you’ll want to find the right flowers!

Red: Maltese Cross

Now many might immediately choose roses for their “red” portion of the “flag”; but roses can be expensive, thorny, and furthermore their red is deeper than that of the flag. It’s got a scarlet, sensual nature to it. Granted, you could go this route, but a flower which has a shade you might appreciate more is called Maltese Cross.

This flower is so-named because it has an appearance similar to the cross of Malta, which is equilateral, and has frilled edges.

White: Four O’Clock

Daisies might be the go-to for many when it comes to the white portion of the flag. Honeysuckle is also a good choice, though it has notes of yellow. Still, these have different, more visible colors defining them. Daisies have a spot in the middle, honeysuckle has a bright center.

Four O’Clock flowers are a pure shade of white and have very little pollen in their centers, appearing monochrome from a distance. Also, these flowers are naturally star-shaped; meaning you can really represent the flag well in a natural way that is subtly impressive.

Blue: Forget-Me-Not

Some would use Bluebells for the indigo portion of the flag, but a lighter, yet-communicative flower for this purpose is the Forget-Me-Not. These beautiful little flowers are a vibrant blue that has a refreshing quality to it, and will do an excellent job of off-setting the bright white star-shaped Four-O’Clocks.
