*Will this outfit work on your body type? All my outfits emphasize flattering an apple shape -wider shoulders/narrow hips. In this picture I am 5’1″ and starting to show my baby bump. I am petite and also have a high waist and short torso.
How to choose a beret
If you are looking for a beret, my best piece of advice is to choose either a very loose knit beret like the one I’m wearing, or choose a soft wool in an extra large size. Typically when I find berets they are very stiff and the opening is too small to work with. It needs to be soft and flexible. The hat opening needs to be big enough to sit on the crown of your head.
How to wear a beret on your head
A beret looks best when worn toward the back of the head. If it’s a traditional wool beret, it looks best if it is slightly tilted to one side.
How to wear a beret with neutral clothes
I love the look of a bright beret paired with neutral clothes. Since a beret is very French, I like pairing it with the classic French look of black and white stripes. I add a bit of edge with a fitted cropped moto jacket and a modern touch with another pop of color- my pointed toe asymmetrical red coral flats.
For apple shapes, this look works well because the long top and cropped moto jacket elongate the torso but also widen the hips since the shirt is exposed on the hip area and the horizontal stripes work to balance out wider shoulders.
Finish the look with a modern matte bright coral lip.
Where you can get items similar to what I’m wearing
A cropped moto jacket goes with everything. These options work great with an apple shape:
When choosing a striped long sleeve top, a scoop neck like this one is most flattering to elongate the neck. Also choose a straight edge hem on the bottom instead of a round hem for the most hip widening effect. Lastly, make sure the length is no shorter than wrist level when your arms are at your sides.
I like my leggings high rise with a thick material like these. This keeps them from falling down all day and the thick material keeps my knickers from showing through.
These are the exact shoes I’m wearing but they are no longer available in this red coral color.
And lastly, some great berets to choose from:
