How do I feel about women with toned arms and sexy shoulders? A bit jealous to be honest. There are so many cute dresses meant for women with these assets. The maxi seems to be a favorite right now. Here is my favorite:
Notice how the large horizontal stripes are completely overwhelming her figure! The length and shoes are all wrong too!
Here’s another fashion victim:
The geometric prints are too large and the colors are too vibrant for her frame. If you’re going for bold geometric prints, you’ll have an easier time if you break up the pattern by choosing a maxi dress with a solid top like this:
This one is from Wetseal. It still has a large geometric pattern, but notice again how there are more vertical than horizontal lines just like the first example. I love the pop of red in this. Of course, if you don’t want the vibrant colors, you can opt for something more sweet and subtle like this one from Bloomingdales:
The delicate print of this dress only works because of the bottom panel and the waist panel. These two panels break up the monotony of the simple prints and also define the waist. Again, stick with flats! And lastly, if any kind of print seems scary at this point, it’s hard to go wrong with a solid maxi. Check this one out:
If geometric prints and solids aren’t your thing, you can always go for florals and horizontal stripes, for a more gypsy, bohemian look. Here’s the one I love:
This one from Arden B. works great because the floral prints are small, and because of the brown solid paneling. Notice how the dark paneling is placed on the woman’s body, right where the body naturally goes in: at the knees (after the curve of the hips) and at the waist. The designer had the woman’s body in mind when creating this piece. Brilliant! This next one, also from Arden B. gets my thumbs up:
This has that effortless prairie feel to it. I don’t know if you can see it from the picture, but this still has panels to break up the white. Adding the ruffles at the bottom also added some flair. As a general rule, a maxi with ruffles or a different color panel at the bottom is good. Since we’re back on solid maxi’s, here’s one that isn’t a halter top, but a tube top maxi. It’s my second favorite of all these maxi’s:
This one from Urban Outfitters looks absolutely comfy. The ruching of the fabric on the chest is my favorite part. It’s great for small-chested women. You don’t have to wear a bra! I love how they accessorized with the simple necklace and sandals. This next one from Shop LA Style is another ruching favorite with added straps and ruffles at the bottom and surrounding the chest area. Love the brown color!
And to keep things peachy, I’ll end with this beautiful, simple dress. I love how the straps look. Check out the twisting effect! I haven’t met a single person who doesn’t look good in peach. Notice too how the coloring gets darker toward the bottom. Very cool.

What I don’t like in maxi dresses:
1. Tie dye. yuck.
2. Animal print.
3. Shiny!
4. Overwhelming geometric prints.
5. When they are paired with anything but flats.
6. When there are sleeves! What’s that about?!
What I love about maxi dresses:
1. delicate florals matched with solid paneling.
2. Geometric prints in dark colors with vertical lines.
3. Solid print.
4. V-neck halter.
5. Solid top matched with printed bottom.
6. Ruffles or separate detailing at the bottom.
7. Floor length.
8. Paired with sandals and flats.
9. Accessorized with simple long necklaces.
10. Ruching.
11. Tube top ruching.
12. Tiered bottoms.
13. The prairie versions.
14. The bohemian versions.
