Love at First Sound: Playlists for Routine Activities

I wonder if I’m the only one who does this, but music is such an integral part of my routines. Having a playlist for certain routines makes me happier. I’m a very sensual person– meaning I really love to focus on anything that engages my five senses. I love food, massages, sex– ha! perfume, kissing and hugging my children, art, sunsets, and of course fashion!

Music and memories

Naturally, I’m also drawn to music. Music brings us back in time. It allows us to see our memories more clearly. Every time I hear Norah Jone’s rendition of “Love me Tender” I am brought back to my wedding day, when my older brother Dee played this song on his guitar as I walked down the aisle looking at Nate.

Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and the entire album of Jars of Clay- “Who We are Instead” brings me back to the summer after I graduated college and spent a month in the scorching heat of California with a friend. I still can hear the bubbling fountain outside her beautiful terracotta apartment. Some songs remind me of exes, of beginnings long gone. They are bittersweet memories, and I’m happy to remember them.

Remembering the good ole days

My memory is not the best let me tell you, so anything that can help with that is important to me. Every weekend, we go on long bike rides, and we always listen to the same Pandora station- songs that sound like “You are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. I hope that listening to this station in the future will bring me back to this time in my life when the boys were young. I feel like we are living in “the good ole days” right now, and I want to remember this time well. I hope they listen to these songs when they are older too and recall these bike rides.

On the weekend mornings when I make a huge brunch and we laze in bed and cuddle with the kiddos…

We ask Alexa to play songs like “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson.

When I’m serving dinner al fresca on a balmy summer night...

I like playing songs like “Girl from Ipanema” with Astrud Gilberto.

When my kids are driving me nuts and I just need a peaceful moment to calm down

I enjoy listening to songs like “Clair de Lune” by Claude Debussy.

When I’m doing my makeup in the mornings...

I love starting my day listening to songs like Chantal Chamberland’s version of “La Mer.” I’ll also alternate this with worship songs that sound like KJ Apa’s songs on the soundtrack “I Still Believe.”

And when we do date nights at home and have dinner and wine together after the boys go down

I love to set up a romantic mood by asking Alexa to play songs like “At Last” by Etta James.

Having these go to playlists really adds to my enjoyment of routine activities. It seems so silly and simple, but it’s true! Do you have playlists for your life? I’d love to know!
