{V-neck shirt from T J Maxx, skirt -gift from friend, slouchy open toe ankle booties from Kohls, Non prescription nerdy glasses from Plato’s Closet Bellevue}

I learned this trick a long time ago, and it seriously works! Printed fabric tends to make things appear larger, while dark solid colors streamline an area of the body. My favorite way to balance out my apple shape is to wear print on the lower half of my body, and wear dark tops- black (of course), and also other colors like gray, navy blue, dark brown, maroon etc…

I’m so excited for today! I’m going shopping with my sister-in-law. We are hitting HnM, Urban Outfitters and probably a couple thrift shops/consignment shops. I’m on the hunt for some peach or brown nerdy glasses:)

I used the same lipstick on my cheeks!

When I saw a bunch of Hollywood starlets wearing the hot pink/fuchsia trend, I just had to get on board!

I did a search on google to find a good brand, but everyone kept on promoting department store brands. For something as trendy as pink lipstick, I just wanted to spend a couple of bucks. So I headed over to Target with all my makeup coupons, looked through every brand’s lipstick colors and found exactly what I was looking for. Something with no hint of gloss, no shimmer. Something dramatic, opaque and bold- like the pink version of a red lip.

I spent about $5! Score!

Here’s what I ended up choosing:

Maybelline SuperStay 14 Hr Lip Color in Perpetually Peony

I layered the lipstick so that it would be super super opaque

If the pink is too fair on your skin, you can add a top layer of red lipstick and blend to create a deeper pink hue

pink reminds me of spring:)

{Slouchy beret from Target, Peep Toe Stilettos by Nine West from Plato’s Closet, Blouse from Target, Bermuda shorts by Lucky Brand Jeans from Value Village Redmond}

I love bermuda shorts. They are more modest than hot pants/regular tailored shorts, and they can be worn with heels, sandals or even flip flops. These bermuda shorts are super comfy because they fall perfectly below my waist. They also flatter my apple figure with diagonal buttons at the pockets that create the illusion of more width in the hip area. Super cute. Today I decided to pair them with cream peep toe stilettos.  The weather was absolutely perfect, with the sun making its appearance. It was the perfect outfit to meet up with my friend at the Mediterranean Kitchen. We decided to “pretend” it was summer.

Most of the time, I love to dress really romantic, and nothing feels more romantic than  a flowy antique rose blouse.  This blouse is so comfy and loose, yet still flattering! I call it my “buffet blouse,” if you catch my drift:) I love anything in the color family of peach or antique rose. It’s a flattering color on most people. It really warms up the face and draws attention to the rouge women put on their cheeks.  Finally I completed the look with a cream slouchy beret (I’ve wrote about my love of this hat here) to match my peep toe shoes.

Remember this post I wrote about how to choose a leather jacket? I found my perfect pleather version at Target for a whopping $39.00! It has these tabs on the shoulders, pockets on the chest area, and is perfectly cropped. It also has vertical pockets by the waist which are very slimming. Plus it has the button collar I’ve been searching for!

{Pleather Jacket from Target, White hip length tank top from Target, Denim skirt from Value Village Redmond, Black leather slouchy booties from Kohls, Slouchy peach beanie from Burlington Coat Factory}

A black pleather jacket doesn’t really keep you warm, but it’s perfect for the spring weather that’s coming! I love this black motorcycle jacket paired with a peachy pink slouchy beanie. The “tough” look of the jacket needs that soft contradiction.

I wear leather peep toe slouchy booties to elongate my legs. I think if you’re petite like me, or more top heavy like me, the cropped jacket works when you are wearing a dark jacket over a lighter shirt. The most important thing is to find an inner shirt with a length that falls about 4-5 inches below your belly button. It evens everything out.

I don’t care what they say about diamonds, I think mascara is a girl’s best friend. Oh the wonders of this little wand. Just so you can see how high impact it is I didn’t wear ANY other eye makeup. Check it out:

Here are the simple steps:

1. First thing’s first: You need a great eyelash curler. I swear by shu uemura’s. And it needs to get heated. I started doing this little trick back in high school. It just made sense to me. Eyelashes are hair, just like the hair on your head. I would never put a metal curling iron in my hair cold. Why would I do that with my eyelash curler? I always heat up my curling iron, and the same principle applies to your lashes.
I heat it up by using my blowdryer on the highest setting for about 10 seconds…

2. Then I always rest it on the side of my palm to make sure it’s not screaming hot. The difference between your curling iron and your eyelash curler is that the eyelash curler always touches your skin. This is why I always do the palm check. Once it is warm but not hot to the touch on the delicate skin on the side of my palm, I know I’m ready to use it on my eyelid/eyelash.

3. It’s now time to immediately curl your lashes. I always make sure to lay the eyelash curler as close to the lash line as possible to get the curl at the root of my lash instead of somewhere in the middle. This makes your lashes the longest and curliest they can possibly be naturally.

4. Now for some tips… Most people don’t really think about the process of putting on their mascara. It’s not the lashes near the bridge of the nose that have the most impact. It’s not the center of your lashes. I’ve noticed that the lashes that look the flirtiest are the lashes on the outer corner. Think of all the Disney female characters!

So, I always start my application there, making sure that I don’t miss those tiny little lashes in the corner.

5. Another tip is to pull the eyelid up so that you can start your application at the very root of the lash line. It’s a big pet peeve of mine to see women wearing mascara that starts in the middle of their lashes…

6. And the last tip to also get to the base of your lashes for better application is to tilt your head way back as you apply the mascara.

Sometimes I put mascara on the bottom lids, but most days I don’t. It doesn’t have as much of an impact and always has a greater chance of smearing or flaking under my eyes. I already have under eye circles!

And that dear ladies is how to put on mascara:)

Remember when Britney Spears popularized the playful school girl look in her first big hit, “Hit Me Baby, One More Time?”

Well, it’s cute and sexy, but not very “grown up.” So, I decided to play around with the idea. Toss the pigtails, bare midriff, thigh high socks. What stays? The skirt. I paired a pleated skirt with grown up mary jane inspired peep-toe heels, a grown up leather bag, a gray “grandpa” hat, and stole my husband’s golf sweater. Add some nerdy glasses and the look is finished.

{Grandpa hat “stolen” from my guy friend. Guy’s hats ALWAYS look better if you have a wide Asian face like me!}

{Shirt borrowed from my hubby’s closet, Bebe pleated skirt from Plato’s Closet, Fossil bag from Value Village Redmond, Nerdy nonprescription glasses from Icing, Nine West Shoes from Value Village Seattle}

{Hat from Burlington Coat Factory (men’s department), Altered blazer from Ross?, Mossimo White Tank from Target, City Fit Shorts from J. Crew, BCBG Paris shoes from Value Village Seattle}

Right now I’m soo in love with shorts paired with heels and a blazer. You already know my love affair with fedoras :) I made a couple alterations to these pieces. I bought the hat which had a weird plaid print on it and immediately went crazy with my sharpi permanent marker in black. The black blazer had long sleeves at one point, but I’ve always found 3/4 sleeves a bit more flattering, so I cut them off and used what very little sewing skills I have to hem the edges.

And I cannot tell you how madly over the moon in love I am with these shorts and J Crew in general. I’ve tried several tailored shorts and they always bunch up in the front. Very unflattering. I think the magic of these shorts is the side zipper, which I’m now a huge fan of. I guess it’s the secret to “no bunching” in the front! They also sit perfectly below my waist. Yay for J. Crew Outlets! I got this pair for a steal! $29.99 at checkout.

ha! My Michael Jackson pose:)

Now I understand that sometimes you want to look all sweet and innocent, super girly and lovely… But I also know there are times when you just want to look like a badass. You have that sundress, but you want to give it some attitude.

Here’s how to do it:

Wear your hair up in a low ponytail, hair parted in the middle and a slight tease on the top:

Wear deep red lipstick:

Do a smokey eye WITH cat-eye:

It lends a bit of drama but still makes you look doe-eyed.

Ditch the pink/peach blush on the apples of your cheeks and opt for bronzer on your cheekbones:

Pair your sundress with a waistcoat made of sweater fabric:

Don a pair of killer slouch booties:

And there you have it!

If this look is a bit too edgy for you, but you still want to wear a sundress looking more sexy and womanly and less innocent and girly, winged eyeliner with bright red lipstick and a floorlength mod sundress will do it for you:

* I will continue the how to do makeup basics series next week with step by step pictures.

I did a photo shoot a couple of years ago. You can check out my awesome model’s portfolio here. When you wear a sundress, you can look really girlish, innocent, and modest.

How do you achieve this look? You wear your hair down, air dried, flowing. You wear minimal makeup, and you wear conservative shoes.

Here are some innocent sundress looks.

5 Fashion Tips

  1. The smaller the floral print, the more forgiving the dress will be. Most people can’t pull off big bright flowers. So to be safe, stick with tiny, small florals.
  2. If you’re going to go for bigger prints, opt for flowers that are spaced out a bit akin to the last orange dress, or in muted colors like the maroon dress.
  3. Don’t be afraid of bright colors.
  4. Nude wedges will go with almost any sundress. Check out the first picture.
  5. All you need is some concealer, pinkish/peach-ish blush and a little bit of mascara to achieve this look.

Product Suggestions

Tarte Cosmetics TEN Limited-Edition Natural Cheek Stain 1 oz.

Again, Tarte is my all time favorite blush brand, lasting all day and looking the most natural!

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage SC-3 One Size

If you want the best department store concealer, this one is IT. Doesn’t budge, doesn’t look cakey when you layer it, stays matte, and covers even the DARKEST acne scars. LOVE IT.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes!

I just recently tried this on my friend Heather when we went to Sephora last week. This might be my favorite department store mascara as of yet!

Makeup can be so much fun, but I’m definitely more a fan of the “no makeup” makeup look. Natural. I want people to see the woman, not the makeup. So, this post is to show you how to do makeup basics. I will also show you some of the products I used.

Thanks to my friend Heather who was my makeover client! Had a super fun day!

Heather just woke up and we headed straight to my house for a fun makeover day:)

Here are some of the key products we used:

Tart blush

    Omg. This is the ONLY blush I’ve ever found that actually lasts all day.

    I used the color “true love,” a perfectly pink shade, no shimmer. Great for day wear

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

    It’s only the best! You’ll forget all about wanting to set aside your life savings for those monthly eyelash extensions every other woman is donning.

Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara

    And you can’t forget the mascara! This stuff is so amazing. Even to its dying day, as it’s drying out, it still doesn’t clump. still. Amazing to the very end. That’s the kind of product that I want to feature. I think this mascara is the hidden little gem of drugstore mascaras.

Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer

    This little guy is the star of the show. I used it to highlight Heather’s cheeks and also added it to her lips for a subtle day shimmer.

Other tools in your toolbox? You definitely need concealer. I love Revlon Photoready Concealer

You also need translucent powder. I love Maybelline Shine Free – Loose Oil Control Loose Powder

Lastly, you need a great liquid liner. I’m still on a search for a good one. Some I’ve tried don’t go on dark enough, others go on dark enough but have a really difficult applicator. Readers, do you have any suggestions?

In my next post, I’m going to break down the application process and hopefully have a video for you guys!
