Know yourself better…
This is one of those pocket-sized productivity hacks that works for me but may not work for others. It’s one of those things that I’ve noticed about myself, or as Gretchen Rubin says, it’s a “know yourself better” observation. I thought I’d share because it seems so counter intuitive but has worked wonders for me! Here it is-
Given I’m waking up at a decent hour (my kids both wake up between 5-7am), I can count on much more energy and more things accomplished if I get out of bed and don’t go back to catch up on sleep EVEN if I didn’t get enough sleep.
I’ve noticed that for me, the very act of catching up on sleep after I’ve already initially woken up and sleeping in makes me feel more groggy and less energetic.
What to do instead of sleeping in
For me, the solution isn’t to go back to sleep. The solution is to take a power nap later on or go to bed earlier that evening. I know not everyone can take naps, but it’s possible to not sleep in and just go to bed earlier the next night.
This is what I observed when I tried this
This little pocket sized productivity hack really made a huge difference! I noticed it the other day when I had less than 5 hours of sleep. I usually would try to crawl back in bed and sleep longer, waking up feeling fatigued and moving slowly the rest of the day. Instead, I jumped out of bed and just went about my day.
I was in shock how much energy I felt and how much I accomplished that day. It was absolutely remarkable.
Here’s what I did that day-
- Went shopping
- Detailed, vacuumed, and cleaned out the entire car including mold
- Made three meals
- Registered for online access to my insurance company
- Wrapped gifts
- Took out the trash
- Ironed clothes
- Cleared out the pool table room
- Deep cleaned the lazy Susan
- Did gingerbread houses with the boys
- Vacuumed the house
- Processed a return label
- Folded and put clothes away
- Washed and put dishes away
I’m positive that this day would have turned out completely different if I had slept in. I did get a power nap that afternoon.
Try it out especially if you’re a morning person
I think this hack works best if you are a morning person like myself or if you like to take naps. It’s such a great motivation to get in bed earlier too, knowing I am trying to not sleep in in the morning.
What do you think? Do you notice this about yourself as well? I’d love to know!
