We spend more time with ourselves than anyone else in the entire world. Maybe that’s why it’s so important for us to like ourselves. Forget loving ourselves, do we even like ourselves? Do we like the characters we’ve developed? Do we like how we are as a friend? As a daughter? As a mother? Do we like the careers we’ve chosen for ourselves? Do we like how we spend our free time? Do we appreciate or even notice our best features- both the seen and unseen? This is such a simple question- but I don’t think many people actually delve into this. It seems like a bit of self-centered navel-gazing. But the thing is, when we like ourselves, we’re able to love and serve the people around us more effectively because we’re not so concerned about their opinion of us. We live more boldly when we aren’t trying to gain other people’s approval. We dream bigger, we take more risks, all because we are more comfortable with ourselves. Basically, when we like ourselves, we are a more effective agent of positive change in the world.
Do you like who you are? I don’t think we’re expected to like everything about who we are, but it would be nice if we actually liked the majority of who we are. With the parts we don’t like, it would be nice if we could accept those things we can’t change with humility and grace and work on changing the things we can change with courage and intention.
