Happy Friday! Today I’m working from the kitchen and watching the cars pass by. We live on a busy street right now which I’m not used to, and my upper back is hurting sooo soo bad! Writing my Friday Five feels like a good distraction from the chaos of the world and the monotony of my daily life. Here’s to finding joy in the little things!
1. Props for Family Photos
Are you going to take any family photos this year? It’s one of those activities that I feel would be pretty easy to do social distancing with your masked photographer. We try to do ours every November, and looking at them throughout the year brings me so much joy. One thing I’m a huge fan of is using props! We had a red heart balloon and a red piece of paper that said “Heckman Family Photos 2017” for our first professional family photo shoot when we had only one kid, and we used cotton candy on sticks for the photo shoot we had when we had two kids. It was a big hit with our eldest! Props give you something to do with your hands, adds a great visual element to your pictures or even a pop of color, and most importantly, they are fun for kids. You can check out the first family photo shoot here as well as tricks and ideas for taking family photos. Our amazing family photographer is Forrest who lives in the Portland area.

2. Jeni’s Ice Cream + Dry Ice Experiments
I asked my Facebook friends what they’ve been buying while sheltering in place in 2020 that they didn’t expect to be buying and it was such a fun thread! While others are buying gym equipment, I’m on the other end of the spectrum and getting my fill of all the desserts delivered to our door. One of my favorite things has been buying ice cream online. It’s summer. It’s hot. And it’s been such a treat to get ice cream delivered. Not only do we get the benefit of trying fun, exciting, one of a kind flavors, the kids have loved doing fun science experiments with the dry ice (supervised of course)!
3. Frog and Toad
Do you enjoy reading books to kiddos? I love when I can make up voices for the characters. Noah and I are obsessed with the Frog and Toad collection. We have this book that has all of the stories in one and they are sooo sooo funny! We laugh at loud when we read these stories and for over a month now, Noah has refused to read anything else. Even better is that these stories have great lessons on friendship. You gotta check them out!
4. The Every Dollar Budgeting App
I am NOT a numbers person, but I’m in charge of our family budget. Do you know that every app I’ve ever tried to budget with- Mint, You Need a Budget, Mvelopes etc has made me feel so stupid? It’s only been since I’ve started using this Every Dollar App that I’ve felt like I can manage a budget app. It lets you move your expenses by holding down a bubble and moving it into the right category. For some weird reason, I love doing this.
5. Advice for Any Girl or Woman
I ran into this a while back on Cup of Jo, and I just love it so much! It’s a great reminder that we can choose to be the kind of women we want to be.
Isn’t that just beautiful?! I hope you have a lovely weekend. See you next week!
