You guys I’m so exhausted! I slept 10 hours last night. Of course it’s period week. I know TMI. That’s just me, constant oversharer. Anyways, I’m happy to be writing my Friday Five. It energizes me. Here are five things I’m psyched about right now.
1. This inexpensive braided headband
I found this cute, adjustable braided headband on Amazon and love it! It was hard to choose because I wanted to make sure it wasn’t too thin, and I really like the thickness of this one. I really didn’t know what color to get, but I think it looks pretty close (I got the medium brown). Not that I have anywhere to go to wear it, but here’s to hoping soon 🙂
2. Noah’s kid art turned etsy shop
So in our household we don’t believe in getting an allowance. I think this is partly because I’m bitter- nobody is paying me to do dishes, make my bed, clean the house a gazillion times a day! haha We want our kids to feel like they are doing chores because they are contributing to the team effort instead of trying to make a buck. Studies have actually shown that kids do more work and more work willingly if it’s for the sake of helping the team rather than making money. This podcast talks about it– kind of in the middle of the 41 minutes but worth a listen. This is the snipet if you just want to get to the meat.
If it’s an essential job, they don’t get paid. If it’s a non-essential job like if Noah wants to help daddy wash the car or when he’s old enough to babysit Luke, then we’ll pay him. Another reason why I don’t want to give an allowance is because I want to help my kids become entrepreneurs. Noah is only four and I’ve started placing his artwork on etsy- at least the ones that look somewhat abstract. You can check it out here!
3. Late afternoon weekday solo hikes thanks to a later sundown
You know what I’ve noticed about being a stay at home mom?
It’s hard to be fully present with your kids when they are always present.
Time away is essential to having that mental and emotional space to be around kids all the time- at least I’ve notice that for myself. That’s why I take a day off once a month and disappear three nights a week when Nate puts the boys down.
Usually I just go to the community center at our apartment or sit on a bench in the park, but this past weekend I thought, the sun doesn’t set until almost 9 and Nate puts the boys down at 6- that’s three hours! Maybe I can squeeze in a solo hike! And so that’s what I did. I don’t know about you but bringing in some novelty to my days any chance I can really helps my sanity while we’ve been sheltering in place. I ended up hiking up Badger Mountain in 45 minutes, enjoying the view at the summit and then hiking back down and enjoying the sunset on a blanket. It was just what my soul needed- a boost of endorphins, novelty, solitude, time away from my kids, and a gorgeous setting.
4. The vegetable dish to eat with Mexican food
For the longest time I’d want to dive into a Mexican dish- enchiladas, chalupas, quesadillas, tacos, or nachos and I’d always be disappointed because most places don’t really serve a big vegetable dish with these yummy main dishes. It would be a sad handful of chopped up iceburg lettuce and tomatoes haphazardly put on the side to bring in some color and texture. BUT I WANT MORE! Many years ago I found the perfect solution! This black bean, corn, avocado, tomato, cilantro, bell pepper dish goes perfect with any Mexican main dish. It’s so delicious and has become a staple in our home.
5. Turning our Family into the Simpsons for Nate’s Father’s Day Gift
What are you doing this weekend for your father or if you’re a mom of young kids like myself, the father of your kids? With things still closed this weekend, I’m not sure what we are going to do, but I’m excited about the gift I got for Nate! I think he will think it funny like I do, and he can keep it at his desk at work. We got our family turned into The Simpsons characters through this site. There’s a 50% off sale right now for Father’s Day! Now I wish I procrastinated haha.
The kids and I are also going to do this Father’s Day printable — my four year old will give the answers. I think it will be fun!
Well that’s it for today! What are you currently excited about? I’d love to know! I hope you have a fabulous weekend, and I hope the sun decides to come out where you live:)
