Friday Find: Surprising Oils that Can Cause Acne and Two That are Safe for Acne Prone Skin

what causes acne, what causes pimples

I was wrong! Don’t use olive oil or Argan oil if you have acne prone skin.

My apologies

Back in 2012, I wrote this post about using olive oil as a beauty product. Ugh, I just cringe thinking I gave bad beauty advice. Fast forward many years later when I found my genius esthetician Emme Diane who completely changed how I looked at my acne prone skin, and now I know better. So many products the beauty industry promotes actually can cause acne, and I was one of those people promoting that. So my sincerest apologies! Now that I know better, I wanted to share a list of oils to avoid if you have acne prone skin. What causes acne? Read below.

Oils to avoid if you have acne prone skin:

  • Argan oil
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Almond oil
  • Apricot Kernal oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Castor oil
  • Cotton seed oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Wheat germ oil
  • Mink oil
  • Peanut oil
  • Rosehip seed oil
  • Shark liver oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Cajeput oil

What causes acne:

Many things can cause acne, but for those who don’t have acne prone skin, it doesn’t affect them at all. Your friend might absolutely love Josie Maran’s Argan oil. She swears by it. If she doesn’t have acne prone skin and you do, she’s not the person to listen to for beauty product advice. Basically what causes someone to have acne prone skin versus non acne prone skin is all genetics. If you do have acne prone skin, the best thing to do is avoid any ingredient in beauty products that can cause acne on acne prone skin. I would highly recommend a long distance consultation with Emme Diane for more education on acne prone skin and to obtain the full list of ingredients that are not safe for acne prone skin.

The only oils safe for acne prone skin:

Now that I know I can use these two oils, I use them generously in winter months on my body and add them to my facial creams and moisturizers in the evening. My favorite way to use these oils is to remove eye makeup.
